EFoC 2: Envisioning the Future of Communication 2023
The Department of Communication and Digital Media, the Digital Media and Strategic Communication Lab and the Lab for Social and Migration Studies of the University of Western Macedonia organise a scientific conference titled: “Envisioning the Future of Communication II: Challenges · Trends · Opportunities”.
The EFoC conference aims to provide a forum for academics, researchers, and professionals to share their latest research endeavors and discuss the challenges, trends, and opportunities of the existing communication landscape with the common goal of shaping the future of Communication.
The conference focuses on – but is not limited to – the following thematics:
- Media literacy
- Fake news/ Fact-checking
- Press freedom
- Investigative Journalism
- Gender and the Media/Media and social exclusion
- Gamification/ Serious Games/ Multimedia applications/ Digital Storytelling in communication
- Contemporary trends in political communication
- Big data (e.g., data journalism, data visualization)
- Online communities
- AI in communication
- PR and Crisis Communication

Submission of abstracts (200-250 words):

Notification of acceptance of abstracts:

Presentation of papers/conference proceedings:
11-12 December 2023
Submission of papers for the Conference proceedings in English only (optional): 30 April 2024

Envisioning the Future of Communication
Kastoria, 13-14 December 2021
More than 60 renowned academics and researchers from Greek and foreign universities, as well as professionals from the field of Communication, participated in this “hybrid” conference, in order to outline the future of communication from various aspects. The participation both online and in person was particularly significant, as more than 350 students attended the conference in person.
The presentations and further discussion revolved around themes related to crisis communication management, media and social media, including misinformation in them, corporate and political communication, public relations and the role of social media in shaping public opinion. Important contributions approached these issues from different perspectives giving inspiration for further research and development. The audience watching from the Grand Auditorium and the live broadcast, addressed questions to the speakers, some in person and others online, providing a spirit of dialogue and a fertile ground for constructive discussions, as interesting positions were heard.
Guest speakers at the conference were Ms Bianca Fox, Professor at Nottingham Trent University and King’s College London, and Mr Nikos Demertzis, Professor of Political Communication and Political Sociology at the Department of Communication and Media at the University of Athens and Director and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the ESRC.
