The central aim of the course is to introduce students to the process of mass communication and the role of the media institution. The course analyzes the basic theories and models of mass communication. The course focuses on the impact of the media on the various audiences that constitute the so-called public opinion. Upon successful completion of the course students will be able:
- To distinguish, based on fundamental concepts, the various theoretical approaches to mass communication,
- To judge the role that the media play in society and to the formation of public opinion.
- To incorporate trends and problems related to the new mass media in the theoretical evaluations of communication.
- To interpret the effectiveness of messages through the perspective of the transmitter and the receivers.
