The European Union (EU) has faced and continues to face a series of crises, such as terrorist attacks, large-scale natural disasters, crises caused by climate change, armed conflicts and wars, economic hardship, hunger and poverty that plague various regions of the planet, cyber-attacks as well as crises that focus on specific thematic areas such as health (e.g. the Covid-19 pandemic) and mass immigration-refugee flows.
These crises can be national crises where an EU member state cannot manage them with its own forces and requests the assistance of other states and organizations, external crises that occur in countries outside the EU, but also cross-border crises that take place at the geographical borders of EU member states with third countries.
